18/03/2021. Suivo organizes a webinar around improving driving behavior and its measurable impact. The presentation is aimed primarily at companies in the logistics sector with a fleet of at least twenty vehicles. The number of interested participants is the best proof that ecological, energy-conscious and economic driving is becoming an increasingly important topic in the transport world.

Why analyze driving behavior?

Driving behavior is one-to-one linked to fuel consumption. Only 43% of all drivers are aware of this. This is evident from the fact that two out of three van drivers leave their engine running when stationary for a few minutes. Any employer who calculates how much fuel this costs on an annual basis will certainly try to limit unnecessary idling from then on. Not to mention the harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

Rapid acceleration also increases fuel consumption and leads to increased tire wear. Wear and tear on the brake discs increases when braking too late and therefore too hard. This, incidentally, often goes hand in hand with unsafe traffic situations. According to insurer TVM, 90% of unsafe traffic situations are due to the driving behavior of the driver. Through inattention or misjudgment of a potential risk. In addition, drivers who drive too fast or dangerously risk a fine. Another cost you would rather avoid as a company.

In summary, these are the main reasons to inspire employees to drive ecologically and safely:

  • Reducing fuel costs and CO2 emissions.
  • Avoiding fines and potential reputation damage in the event of an accident.
  • Reducing maintenance costs and insurance premiums.

Possible solutions for eco-driving

Preventive maintenance of vehicles and components is extremely useful. It is relatively easy to schedule based on running hours or mileage. In this way, necessary repairs are detected in time and the damage frequency within your fleet will be actively reduced.

In addition, data analysis offers rational insights into the driving behavior of drivers. Hardware in the vehicle (a BlackBox and possibly a CAN-bus interface) captures data about the driving style. Think of speed, cornering, g-force, … This data is measured by the BlackBox and put into reports for analysis. The reports show such things as driving scores – whereby an A score indicates that a driver is driving economically and ecologically – and possibly CAN bus information about engine speed, engine load and so on. With all this data at hand, the fleet manager can enter into very concrete discussions with his drivers about their individual driving behaviour.

Suivo hardware for eco-scoring

You can choose to install only an IoT – Extended BlackBox in your vehicles. This BlackBox has an internal memory to store information at times when there is no internet connection. So no data is lost, it’s just that sometimes data is transmitted with a slight delay to the Suivo IoT Cloud Platform. There, the Eco – drive module calculates the eco-score of a vehicle, after which the ecological and economic impact of the driver is visualized in a report. By linking a badge reader, you can – if desired – identify that driver. It is an effective way to individually discuss issues such as g-force, constant speed and idling.

If you link the BlackBox to a CAN bus, you can record additional information about consumption (both idling and driving) and driving behavior, such as percentage of cruise control, excessive rpm and excessive engine load.

Real-time tracking of vehicles

The Suivo Web App provides a detailed visualization of the data recorded by the hardware in each vehicle. This allows you to assign fines to the correct driver or estimate whether or not braking was used before an accident. The tool allows visual and individual insight into driving behavior, driving style and fuel consumption. It is also very easy to make reports, per trip, per day, per month, per vehicle, … To follow up on mileages and CO2 emissions, calculate eco-scores, map CAN-bus data, etc. The fuel module provides insight into consumption per vehicle.

All information together gives a clear picture of the ecological footprint of your fleet as a whole and the eco-score of each individual driver. It makes driving behavior measurable and easy to discuss. The improvements you can introduce as a result are guaranteed to bring welcome savings.

Eco-drive is a module of the Suivo IoT Cloud Platform that visualizes the ecological and economical impact of a driver by using the Track and Trace data and hardware. Sharing this type of info with your driver crew has been proven to be an effective way to improve things like fuel usage, tire wear or oil consumption.

A necessary shift in the market

The influence of the transportation industry on climate change is getting bigger. Transport is responsible for 18% of greenhouse gasses.

“We notice that a lot of our clients are worried about the environment. (…) For our clients in transport and logistics it is a general mission to become ‘greener’. They want to minimize their ecological footprint and at the same time decrease their fuel usage. (…) Finally, the margin of those same transportation companies is under great pressure. Every tool that can decrease costs for logistics, helps them to invest in their futures.” says Dirk Lambrechts, CEO of Suivo.

How does ‘eco-driving’ work?

With a Blackbox and a CAN-bus connection, we’re able to measure things like speed, G-force and cornering. This data in a smart tool converts into 3 main pillars of the module: economic driving, environmental impact and energy consumption.

Drivers can get a daily notification of their “driving scores” with a handy e-mail report at the end of each day. There are three possible scores: an A, B and C. An A-score means a driver is driving economic and ecological, and a C-score is the opposite. Other details are included like speeding, accelerating and braking, how they make their turns, etc. The fleet manager or dispatcher can also see a general live report of the entire fleet in the web interface. In the standard daily reports, its easy to see who are the ‘black sheep’ among the drivers lowering the overall eco-score.

What is the impact in your company?

– You can identify blind spots in your fleet by measuring exact data on turns, braking, accelerating, fuel consumption and more.

– Creating awareness on driving behaviors decreases the amount of speeding tickets, fuel consumption etc. On the long term this saves a lot of costs.

– You can prevent accidents and increase safety by measuring potential unsafe driving styles.

– Drivers can be motivated to drive ‘pro-actively’ by rewarding them if they achieve an A-score.

Agora selects Suivo tracking system https://www.suivo.com/blog/agora-selects-suivo-asset-tracking-system/ Wed, 10 Feb 2021 14:22:42 +0000 http://local.suivo.com/index.php/2021/02/02/agora-selects-suivo-asset-tracking-system/ This investment forms part of the modernization of the company’s IT environment.

Agora, the market leading wholesale center for professional florists and garden centers, has turned to Suivo and Go4Logistics for an integrated telematics and logistics solution that will ensure perfect follow-up of their delivery vehicles, including distributing daily schedules and task lists for drivers. This investment forms part of the modernization of the company’s IT environment.

Integrated overviews, more control and real-time information flows

When discussing their requirements, Agora highlighted three issues that they wanted the new solution to solve: more control over empty goods management; better overview of all transport orders; and real-time information flows between branches, drivers and sub-contractors.

1. More control over empty goods management

Transporting flowers and plants is more complex than simply loading a truck in one location and unloading it at another. Instead, the delivery truck needs to arrive at the delivery location with special containers that keep the flowers in perfect condition during transportation. It is not easy for Agora to follow-up on the total amount of containers needed and the exchange of them at different locations.

By creating a connection between the Suivo transport app and the empty goods management software module in the Go4Logistics’ backend ERP, Go4TMS, Agora will be able to accurately monitor and follow-up their special containers, as well as the rest of their assets.

2. Better overview of all transport orders

Currently, Agora edits sales orders in three different systems, making it difficult for the transport department to follow-up in an efficient way. Go4Logistics recommends using their order import module in their Transport Management System (TMS, a Microsoft Dynamics application) to capture and manage all orders in one system.

3. Real-time information flows

Agora’s purchasing companies in France, Italy and the Netherlands deliver to its 22 Cash & Carry branches in Belgium and France via their own fleet of 12 trucks. The fleet is supplemented by up to 30 additional sub-contractors driving their own vehicles during busy periods such as Christmas or Mother’s Day.

Suivo suggested a mobile app for all Agora and sub-contracted drivers to ensure better follow-up of deliveries (and empty goods management). The mobile app would be linked to Go4Logistics’ Go4TMS and provide each driver with his/her daily schedule and enable him/her to finish their daily tasks, for example: scanning goods, registering empty goods, handling returns, damage registration, photographing damage or transport documents, signing receipts, and emailing POD. The app would also transmit information in real-time back to Go4TMS to enable dispatchers to follow-up deliveries.

Additionally, Suivo recommended installing a professional vehicle tracking system for Agora’s 12 trucks. The tracking system will be completed with a driving analysis application and an option for a digital tachograph download. The system ensures a perfect follow-up of the trucks’ locations, the driving analysis application maps the driving styles of the different drivers and the automatic tachograph download gives the dispatcher a clear overview of the driving and rest times of each driver.

Suivo and Go4Logistics integration

Together Suivo and Go4Logistics offer a total solution that fits Agora’s requirements by automating internal information flows to bring Agora’s customer service to a new level.

About Agora

From its five Cash & Carry branches in Belgium and a further 17 in France, Agora offers everything that professional florists and garden centers need under one roof: daily fresh cut flowers and green materials, a wide selection of indoor and outdoor plants, basic necessities and the latest trends in decoration. Agora also has purchasing companies in France, Italy and the Netherlands.

How to assure and monitor the quality of on-time deliveries? An issue that Transport Th. Wouters always tries to optimize for, to improve their performance and customer service.

Transport Th. Wouters is a leading container trucking company in the Port of Antwerp, supporting the complete range of logistic services, warehousing and supply chain management via Trans-Continental Logistics (TCL), which is member of the same group.

As a family business, they guarantee fast decisions and a dedicated team that will go the extra mile for their customers. Transport Th. Wouters guarantees a reliable and efficient integrated all-in logistics service.

Monitor

All their trucks were already equipped with a modern tracking system, enabling their dispatchers to monitor the cargo in real-time. However, Transport Th. Wouters still saw more potential to optimize their transportation process. In order to run even more smoothly and cost-effectively they wanted to equip their fleet of 125 trailers as well with a GPS and IoT tracking system. One of their most difficult requirements was to find a partner that could seamlessly integrate with their existing software systems. This is what brought them to Suivo.

125 Trailers

Their previously installed tracking system used an on-board computer system. The problem however, was that it could not detect exactly which trailers are connected to which truck. The innovative trailer tracking system from Suivo helps them close exactly this gap. 125 trailers will be equipped with the battery-powered asset tracker Hydrogen. This smart tracker will help to track the location of the trailer as soon as the trailers move. It also determines a status like ‘free’ or ‘connected to a truck’. Once a trailer is connected with a truck, it detects via a tiny IoT tag – which is plugged to the back of the truck – to which truck it’s connected. As soon as the trailers detects which truck is nearby a link is made between trailer & truck. This linked information will be sent through the Suivo IoT Cloud platform and gets visualized in the dashboards of their own software. In the tracking platform trucks and trailers are visualized as “occupied”.

Cost-effective

This very simple process, with easy DIY-installable trackers enables Transport Th. Wouters to have a real-time overview on the free capacity of trailers, follow-up transport loads in real-time and run their transportation process even more smoothly and cost-effectively.
